Elementary Education (American University)
An Elementary Education Bachelor of Arts from American University requires 120 credit hours to complete, 68 of which must be from education courses. This four-year degree prepares students to work in an elementary school setting. Before entering the program, candidates must pass the PRAXIS CORE or equivalency exam and meet all other requirements from the university.
The goal of the program is to prepare participants to work with elementary students. Individuals learn about different instructional strategies and teaching methods for all core subjects, including math, science, literature and social studies. They can then choose a concentration, such as mathematics, literature, art or music.
In addition to their regular coursework, participants are required to complete a semester of student teaching. During this time, students meet for a weekly seminar to talk about their experiences and things they can improve upon. This hands-on opportunity is invaluable for those individuals who are entering the education field.
