Dance (American University)
The dance program in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University is designed to open students up to a wide range of styles, including musical theatre, tap, ballet, African and many others. After completing the core curriculum required by the university, participants must take at least 43 credit hours of dance courses, which typically takes about four years total.
In addition to studying different styles, students are taught dance theory. They go over the business side of performances and learn about the technology, design and media that goes into them. They are given the opportunity to develop invaluable skills through additional workshops, seminars and capstone projects. Participants are also given the chance to perform and/or choreograph each semester.
Faculty members mentor students during their time at the university. Throughout the program, students are able to move to different levels of difficulty and choose courses that fit in with their ultimate goals.
