Communication Studies (American University)
A BA degree in Communication Studies is a great way to begin a career in a media-related field. This four-year program is offered by the American University School of Communication and is intended to create an interdisciplinary educational program that graduates students ready for successful careers in the field.
Completion of the degree requires 39 credit hours of coursework within the major completed at or above a C-grade. In addition, students are required to declare a second major or minor in a non-communication subject area. At least three credits each of economics and United States history are also required, but do not count toward the calculated GPA for major coursework. Admission to the program also requires that students achieve a 2.50 GPA or better by the end of their fourth semester of study.
Coursework within the program includes studies in visual and written media, marketing, and social topics. Students may also choose from classes in journalism, contemporary culture, and foreign policy. An internship or capstone project may be required in the student’s final semester of study.
