Chemistry (American University)
A BS in chemistry is a 120-credit hour program, or approximately four years at American University. After major declaration, the chemistry program takes 72 credit hours to complete, or just over two years of study. The core requirements include several levels of chemistry, including labs, advanced chemistry, experimental chemistry and biochemistry, along with courses in calculus and physics.
The program prepares students for graduate study or careers in the chemistry field. Bachelor’s students may enter medical or dental school or other careers where technical expertise is celebrated. Students receive encouragement to work with faculty one-on-one and to participate in projects at every level.
The chemistry program provides participants with the fundamentals of chemistry and areas of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. The program offers students the opportunity to receive laboratory experience and creates a foundation for an understanding in basic chemical principles, along with discovery and characterization and classification of materials.
