Arabic Studies (American University)
The four-year BA program in Arabic Studies at American University offers students the opportunity to study a variety of subjects within Arabic language and culture. Courses include proficiency in both Modern Standard Arabic and Palestinian Arabic, as well as studies in linguistics and Arabic-Islamic relations.
Students in the Arabic Studies program will need to complete teacher training in addition to their program requirements, as well as a minor related to their field and 12 credit hours of a second foreign language of their choice. The core degree requires 36 credit hours of courses within the major, plus all general education and elective requirements, for a total of 120 hours of undergraduate credit. The program also includes a semester-long capstone project in which the student creates unique thesis work to demonstrate their understanding of Arabic languages and cultural significance.
Students with this degree can go on to a variety of positions, including secondary-level foreign language teachers, professional translators, or bilingual educators.
