Applied Mathematics (American University)
Formal admission to the applied mathematics major at American University requires a GPA of 2.0 and approval from the Mathematics and Statistics Department. It takes four years and 120 credit hours to complete the BS in Applied Mathematics program. The goal of the program is to prepare students to enter the workforce as researchers, tech developers, or teachers, or to continue their studies in a graduate program. Classes at the freshman and sophomore level include courses in computer science, calculus, probability, and complex analysis.
Natural sciences are also required, such as biology and chemistry. This requirement may be waived for students who have a double major in the science department. At the upper levels, students may choose an additional 12 credit hours in the area in which they wish to focus. This can be math, statistics, or computer science. To graduate, students must have received the grade of C or better in all their major classes.
