American Studies (American University)
The BA in American studies is a four-year degree that provides students with a broad education in the cultural, social and economic structure of America. To complete a BA at American University requires 120 credit hours, which take about four years. The major itself requires 39 credit hours, or just over one year of study.
Students who enter the American studies program have a wide range of opportunities after graduation. Many use American studies as a foundation for law school or to work for non-profit organizations, activist groups, government or other cultural fields. The focus of the program allows students to explore the diverse national and transnational identities throughout the United States.
American studies majors are encouraged to become actively involved in the community through service organizations. The coursework requires students to study subjects including the American dream, lives in America, poverty, American history, community activism and interpreting American culture. Students develop broad critical thinking skills, writing skills and problem-solving skills.
