Alvernia University

School Description

Alvernia University owes its early beginnings to the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis who opened an orphanage in the year 1926, which then became an elementary school and was later established as a college for the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters in 1958. Through the years, the institution grew not only in enrollment, but as well as educational opportunities until finally achieving university status as the Alvernia University in 2008.

Today, Alvernia University's campus in Reading sits on a 121 acres of historic grounds where it houses its 8 colleges and schools through which it offers over 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The campus also boasts of 11 residence halls where over 77% of its 3,000 students live on campus.
