Algoma University was established in 1965 when it started offering classes as Algoma College, initially affiliated with the Laurentian University. Through the years, enrollment in the institution grew despite difficulties until finally becoming Algoma University in 2008 with the special mission of providing education strictly to undergraduate students.
Today, Algoma University offers undergraduate degrees in over 30 areas of concentration through its 12 academic departments and currently enrolls just under 1,600 students, 22% of which are international students. Its campus in Sault Ste. Marie employs over 60 full-time faculty members and houses 3 on-campus residence halls and apartments that can accommodate more than 200 students.
