Albion College
School Description
Albion College was originally established to meet the educational needs of the children of Native Americans and settlers in the area. In 1835, through the efforts of the Methodists who had settled in this region, the College was awarded a charter by the Michigan Territorial Legislature. In 1857 Albion College and Wesleyan Seminary Corporation merged to form the Wesleyan Seminary and Female College at Albion. In 1861, Albion received full authorisation to award four-year college degrees to both men and women.
Today, Albion stands on 225 acres with more than 30 major buildings. Enrollment at the College has shot up from 500 students in 1901 to over 1500 today. The College offers 49 majors, concentrations, and pre-professional programs through its academic departments in Anthropology & Sociology; Art & Art History; Biology; Chemistry; Communication Studies; Economics & Management; Education; English; Ethnic Studies; Geological Sciences; History; International Studies; Kinesiology; Mathematics & Computer Science; Modern Languages and Cultures; Music; Philosophy; Physics; Political Science; Psychological Science; Religious Studies; Theatre; and Women’s & Gender Studies. Currently Albion has over 100 full-time faculty and more than 23,000 living alumni.
