Master’s in Environmental Engineering
A Master’s in Environmental Engineering is competitive graduate program that is offered at institutions around the world. In these programs, students gain valuable skills and knowledge that can help them build valuable careers in a variety of cutting-edge industries. In just a few short years, students can join with other enterprising minds to create many of the technologies that are necessary to protect people from adverse effects of the environment and improve environmental quality. Students with strong backgrounds in STEM fields, or science, technology, engineering and math, are often the best suited and most likely people to be selected for positions in these master’s programs.
What is a Master’s in Environmental Engineering?
The requirements for a Master’s in Environmental Engineering largely depend on the program that students choose to pursue. There are often distinct similarities between programs, including their program structure, course requirements and grading system. However, some schools do have significant differences, so students should be aware of these differences and understand which program can help them achieve their goals prior to enrolling.
Many Master’s in Environmental Engineering programs have strict admission requirements to ensure that students have a solid background in many areas. It is not uncommon for universities to require applicants to have at least one year of calculus, calculus-based physics and chemistry. Only upon satisfactory completion of these units will many programs accept applications for entry into the master’s program.
Once in the program, course requirements can vary greatly. Some programs have a strict program that dictates which courses must be taken, while others allow a more specialised approach to the degree. For example, Johns Hopkins University requires students to take five courses from the Environmental Engineering program in addition to five electives from three relevant areas of study. Conversely, USC only requires 9 units of core courses, 12 units of concentration courses and 6 units of electives. At Yale, students create their own program with faculty members.
No matter which program students choose, core and elective coursework may consist of classes with the following topics:
- Water and wastewater characterisation
- Air pollution control
- Environmental engineering design
- Groundwater remediation
- Applied hydrology
- River engineering
- Microbial processes in environmental systems
What Are the Benefits of Getting a Master’s in Environmental Engineering?
Environmental engineers are some of the most essential engineers on the planet. Civilisations depend on these bright minds to use their knowledge to keep clean water flowing and develop solutions to the environmental problems that constantly face humans. Because of their importance, graduates often have the great benefit of receiving a competitive salary. Additionally, there are many public and private positions available in a variety of institutions for graduates to enter. Additionally, if further education is a student’s goal, this degree can allow them to prepare and enter a PhD program.
What Kind of Career Can You Expect With a Master’s in Environmental Engineering?
Master degree programs in Environmental Engineering act as excellent preparation for a few specialised careers, with environmental engineer being the most commonly pursued. An environmental engineer is responsible for designing scientific and technical solutions to keep the air, land and water clean for human use. They can take the title of researcher, public health advocate, consultant, manager or government official while acting in this capacity.
