During a graduate medical programme, students will gain an understanding of basic and advanced medical topics. Courses in biochemistry, immunology, neuroscience, and microbiology are usually required in the first year. The second and third years allow students to explore various medical fields such as psychiatry, cardiology, radiology, and surgery. Medical programmes are notoriously intensive, and usually require students to enrol full-time. Students may also be required to do the following.

  • Perform research and report their findings to senior faculty members.
  • Take courses such as genetics, neurology, and obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Attend and participate in lectures, discussions, and examinations.
  • Shadow practicing physicians at university-affiliated hospitals and clinics.

In order to gain entry to medical school, most students are required to take Calculus I and II, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and an English composition course during their undergraduate studies. A bachelor’s degree in any subject is required, but many schools give preference to non-science majors. An examination that measures an individual’s understanding of science called the MCAT, is also required for entry. Extracurricular activities and undergraduate academic performance are examined as well. Medical schools may also require students to attend an interview.
