Master’s in Engineering Technology

A Masters in Engineering Technology is a program offered around the world. As a graduate-level degree, this type of program is aimed at honing the already established skills and knowledge students have in the fields of physics, engineering, mathematics and other applied sciences. A concentrated advanced coursework in these areas prepares students to meet the needs of a world increasingly faced with technological challenges. Whether students wish to pursue a terminal professional master’s program, or a master’s en route to a PhD, they will be given the opportunity to greatly increase their expertise in these highly technical, challenging and competitive degree programs.

What is a Master’s in Engineering Technology?

The overall structure of a Master’s in Engineering Technology degree program is likely to have many of the same components and requirements throughout many regions of the world. Most programs are research-based, which means that the programs are designed to help students learn through active, hands-on research. Graduate students are also asked to participate in class lectures, seminars and labs during their time in these programs. Possible coursework includes:

  • Sensors and measurements
  • Microsystems and microfabrication
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Research methods and statistics
  • Modern materials
  • Engineering quality methods
  • Computing
  • Project management

At some universities, students are given the opportunity to focus their studies in a particular area. These specialisations may be based on faculty expertise, or they may be based solely on student interest. Some possible areas of concentration may include advanced manufacturing, electronics, construction and mechanics.

Following completion of most of the degree requirements, students may be asked to complete a capstone or thesis project. This requirement, which is personally overseen by a member of the faculty, is meant to show that students have learned all of the major skills necessary to succeed in an engineering technology-related field.

What Are the Benefits of Getting a Master’s in Engineering Technology?

When students pursue master degree programs in Engineering Technology, they experience many benefits. Graduates may be highly sought after for decision making and leadership positions. They are also given the rare opportunity to specialise in a field that incorporates incredibly advanced, state-of-the-art technology in their every-day activities. Students who choose a non-terminal program also have the opportunity to pursue a PhD in the field and may receive a greater salary at the completion of their educational endeavors.

What Kind of Career Can You Expect With a Master’s in Engineering Technology?

Graduates of a Master’s in Engineering Technology have the added benefit of being able to choose from many different career paths, depending on their interests and strengths. Students can find success in a variety of industries, including healthcare, transportation, aerospace, and green manufacturing. Other potential industries include:

  • Telecommunications
  • Robotics
  • Product design
  • Renewable energy
  • Automotive
  • Quality control
  • Environmental control

Within these industries, graduates can choose to become engineering technologists who specialise in their particular area of study. Alternatively, students can choose to become mechanical engineering technicians, engineers, computer engineers, or a manager in one of these disciplines.
