The Norwich and UEA Landscape
The University of East Anglia boasts a stunning campus, built on 200 hectares of parkland in the outskirts of Norwich. As one of the safest and most attractive cities in the UK, Norwich is famous for its historic cathedrals, 12th century Norman Castle and well-preserved ancient city walls. It has everything expected from a university city – excellent shopping, a great night life and a vibrant music scene. As well as being surrounded by beautiful English countryside, Norwich is just a short drive away from the beautiful North Norfolk coast.
Norwich has a great reputation for culture too – the city was named the first English UNESCO city of literature. It also has many museums and galleries, including the UEA’s world-renowned Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, alongside numerous theatres, cinemas and some great music venues and local festivals. Food lovers can experience a mix of local and international cooking, ranging from Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Lebanese, Indian, Moroccan or Thai, or if students just want to relax over a flat white or a cup of English tea, there are lots of great little independent coffee houses too.
Achievements and Developments
UEA is proud to be internationally recognized for its pioneering ethos and strengths in research and teaching. But there’s more to UEA than being one of the best universities in the UK – its warm welcome and amazing campus sets the university apart. The university supports students, nurtures their talent and helps them thrive and the hard work does not go unnoticed. UEA was awarded a Gold ranking from the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017-2020 and it was ranked in the UK Top 15 by The Sunday Times 2018 and the Complete University Guide 2019. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018 marks the school in the World Top 200.
UEA believes in investing in the future. As an international research-intensive university, located at the heart of Norwich Research Park, the University is passionate about developing innovative approaches, building new facilities, and supporting new scholarships to achieve excellence in research and education. UEA is investing in the campus, creating new learning environments and accommodation to embrace new learning technologies and helping to shape the leaders of tomorrow.
World-Class Teaching Quality
At UEA, students don’t just learn about what other people have done, thought or said. They learn by doing things for themselves. That’s because UEA believes students learn best by experiencing the challenges of the subject firsthand.
Many of UEA’s lecturers and teachers are world experts, leading the way in their fields. Such as Dr. Michael Wormstone, an expert in cataract research; Dr. Paul Bernal, a published expert on internet privacy rights; Dr. Eylem Atakav, who is running the first course in the UK on Women, Islam and Media; and Professor Matt Hutchings, whose work involves discovering new antibiotics. But crucially, UEA staff are just as dedicated to learners and their studies as they are to their own research.
This means studies are informed by the latest thinking and most up-to-date research. It also means that as well as gaining a solid grounding in the study area, students will graduate with in-depth knowledge of the aspects of their subject that are still emerging today.
The University of East Anglia also has a partnership with INTO UEA which offers academic preparation courses and English language programs designed specifically for international students.
Student Life on Campus
In addition to UEA’s award-winning buildings, fantastic facilities and a plethora of societies, students will also have access to a £30 million Sports Park, a 24-hour library, the internationally acclaimed Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and the LCR, a vibrant music venue. The campus was designed so that everything you need for living and studying is no more than a few minutes away.
Students have the opportunity to get involved in over 200 clubs and societies run by the Students' Union at UEA and international students play a vital part of life at UEA. The university offers a warm welcome and continued support to students throughout their time at university and even after graduation. The university currently offers a Language Buddy Support Scheme to help international students practice their language skills, as well as a social program to visit other cities in the UK such as London and Cambridge.
