Founded in 1901, Northern State University (NSU) is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota in the Midwestern United States. NSU is a public university that offers its students a liberal arts, graduate, and pre-professional education. The school strives to provide students with real-life experience, global knowledge, and an atmosphere that fosters curiosity, personal development and academic excellence.

Northern State University understood early on that, in this increasingly interconnected world, our students had to engage with people from a wide range of cultures and traditions in order to grow as young adults who are aware of local and global dynamics. We have been welcoming international students to our campus for the past twenty years and many have gone to pursue graduate studies and achieve fulfilling careers in the US and in the world.

- Ioana Hojda, Assistant Director of International Admissions, Northern State University

When the recently announced Educational Impact Campaign is complete, NSU will be the recipient of more than $100 million in privately funded building projects and scholarships within a decade. The university has recently renovated its fine arts center and built a new residence hall. NSU now has more major updates and renovations in store, including a brand new sports complex and football field, a new science center, and two new student dormitories.

Aberdeen, South Dakota is the third largest city in the state and is home to 26,000 residents. The city was ranked as the second-best small college town in the country by USA Today and and it is no wonder why - students will find no shortage of things to do around town. They can listen to live music events almost every day, frequent the many restaurants and cafes throughout the town, or even catch a play at the historic Capitol Theatre. Lovers of the great outdoors will not be disappointed by the city’s vast hiking and cycling trails or the cross-country skiing and hunting opportunities. The picturesque area gives students all the amenities of a large city while exuding small town charm.

There are two new residence halls being built on campus: Great Plains East and Great Plains West. One of the halls will have a modern pod-style design consisting of eight to ten double rooms surrounding a common living space and bathroom. The second new residence hall will have semi-suites and suites with double and single rooms.

With these two new student dormitories, plus the recently inaugurated Wolves Memorial Suites building, over half of NSU’s on-campus students will live in new facilities by fall 2018.
