The city of Derry in Northern Ireland is home to 150,000 residents and it the fourth largest city in Ireland. The famous walled city is also one of the oldest in Ireland and it was voted the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013. Northern Ireland is one of the most affordable places to live in the UK and Derry itself has been identified as having the lowest cost of living in the region, making the area a favorite among university students. The young university city is buzzing with things to do and students can enjoy shopping, dining, sports, cultural, art and other leisure activities in this beautiful town. The stunning natural landscape and rich culture attract visitors from all around the world year-round.

I came to Derry on the recommendation of my brother who studied here 4 years ago and he told me here is the best place to learn English. Derry is, to be honest with you, it is good. Lovely people and very friendly. If I could describe Derry in one word it would be lovely. My favourite place in Derry is Brook Park because I love the greenery and trees.

The Derry community is warm, friendly and approachable – people are always ready to say hello and answer your questions. This welcoming environment makes it easy for international students to practice their English skills and learn to communicate effectively with native English speakers.

What is the Foyle International Foundation Year Program?

The International Foundation Year (IFY) program is a university pathway program for international students to help them gain admission to universities with the NCUK system. To enroll in the IFY program you must have completed 12 years of school, be at least 17 years old and also have an IELTS 5.0 score or the equivalent. IFY is a one-year program that replaces the traditional first year of a UK undergraduate degree. Foyle offers IFY in Business & Humanities and in Art & Design – the school ensures that students achieve the academic qualifications required for a UK university, but also the required English language skills. The IFY program helps international students integrate into their new environment and provides them with support, guidance and extra help where needed.

The IFY program has special English for Academic Purposes (EAP) modules that focus on English language and study skills that are recognized by numerous UK universities to ensure smooth transitions when integrating into the traditional UK university programs. Students who successfully complete the one-year IFY program are guaranteed enrollment to one of the 16 UK universities within the NCUK system.

Why International Students Choose Foyle

Foyle International in blog 4

With approximately 1500 students enrolled every year, Foyle’s student body consists of international students from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Russia and Africa. The campus community is truly diverse and international, making it easier for overseas students to make new friends and settle into their new environment.

Honestly, Foyle staff are friendly and helpful with their students and always keep smiling. Every Saturday they have excursions and activities.I would say I wasn’t really far away from my real family cause I found my second family here in Derry. Helen (my host family) was lovely and they cheered me up when I felt down. However, the most beautiful thing is the local people who are extremely friendly and Derry is quite small city with many amazing beaches around for swimming or relaxing.
