SchoolApply interviewed a freshman student at ESCP Europe in Paris, Ashish Thodupunuri, to find out how the experience has been so far for him.
Location: Paris, France
Student Name: Ashish Thodupunuri
From: Hyderabad, India
Favorite class: My favorite class is Financial Accounting because I’m really good with numbers and accounting concepts. Since I started studying accounting in Paris, I have learned a lot about the French accounting system and standards and this has updated my existing knowledge in this field. I learn something new from this class every day.
Favorite school event: To date, the best school event has been the Gala. It was a black tie event soI could finally wear my tuxedo which had been lying in my closet for months. It was a grand event at a remarkable venue and it was a good way to relax our minds as we had just finished our exams.
Four words to describe ESCP Europe: Unique, Original, Challenging, Diverse
Tell us a little about yourself. Where have you lived and studied?
I’m from Hyderabad, India and this is the first time I have traveled abroad for my studies, so Paris is the only other destination where I have lived or studied apart from India. Before ESCP, I was enrolled in a high school in India called DPS Nacharam. At DPS, I studied subjects such as Business, Accounting, Literature, Economics, Statistics, and Mathematics. I scored exceptionally high grades and graduated with flying colors from DSP Nacharam!
How did you hear about ESCP Europe and what made you decide to study in France?
I always wanted to begin my university life abroad because I believed it would be a good kick-start before I entered the business world! European business schools are known across the globe for their exceptional teaching methods and courses. They have a unique blend of subjects which keep students in a challenging and rewarding position where they gain both theoretical and practical knowledge through an innovative approach.
My brothers told me a lot about ESCP Europe and its unique program and I think that’s why, out of all my other options, I decided to choose ESCP Europe for my academic journey. The ESCP slogan – “Three Years, Three Countries, Three Languages” – was in itself an attractive factor for me. It is a highly ranked university in Europe and the third best business school in France. Students complete their courses in a different country every year, which gives students an opportunity to explore multiple business environments and learn different languages. This was also an important factor in why I chose ESCP over other universities.
Did you have any problems adjusting to life in a new country and university? If so, how did you overcome them?
Yes, during my initial days in Paris I faced a few issues since I don’t speak French. However, as the days passed and I learned some words and phrases, this was not as much of an issue. I also asked my French-speaking friends for help and they assisted me in buying a SIM card, metro pass and other items, so this made my life a lot easier.
What degree are you pursuing and why?
Currently, I’m pursuing a Bachelor in Management (BSc) degree. I always knew that I wanted to do something related to business and commerce and this course was a perfect match for me.
Do your current studies support your interest and talent? If so, how?
Yes, they do. I don’t know about talent, but they surely support my dream! I have always dreamed of doing something in the business management field and I believe that the knowledge I obtain from ESCP is surely going to help me climb the steps to success.
What has your academic and social experience been like as an international student at ESCP Europe?
Academically, I have been exposed to new subjects such as Law, Psychology, International Relations, Presentation Skills and Languages (German and Italian). I have also increased my knowledge in the areas of Mathematics, Economics and Business. The courses are really good and I have so far scored good marks due to regular practice and dedication.
As an international student at ESCP, I have learned a lot about many different countries and their cultures. I also love the location of the ESCP campus. It is situated in one of the best districts of Paris and is very close to a large number of cafes, restaurants and bars. There are also many student associations at the university that help international students get involved in campus life through parties and other events.

What were your first impressions of ESCP Europe? Honestly, I was very nervous before the first day, but all of the students were welcomed in a very friendly manner that made me feel more comfortable. I was incredibly happy when I saw the ESCP Europe logo – I couldn’t believe that I had finally made it here! I remember noticing the typical European architecture all across the huge campus. I was also pretty excited about the courses I had for that day and, thankfully, all of my classes went well.
Do you take part in any extracurricular activities at ESCP Europe?
Yes! I enrolled myself in fencing classes that are taught once a week at the university. I have taken around 17 classes so far and it’s been amazing. It’s a unique sport and really good for fitness. For me, the fencing classes are like a break from my busy study schedule. The coach is very friendly and motivates the students to put in full effort.
I’m also a member and treasurer of a student group called “Bachelors Society” which will be launched by the end of this semester. The society aims at helping new bachelor students with their projects, documentation processes, campus life and much more.
What would you say to international students who are considering studying at ESCP Europe?
I would say apply! ESCP Europe’s Bachelor’s Degree program has a unique combination of subjects, plus you get to study in three different countries and learn three different languages – all of this inevitably increases your probability for success in the future.
