Where are you from? What countries have you lived and studied in?

I was born in Bahrain, as my parents were working in the country at the time. I spent 17 years there and completed my high school education in Bahrain. I then moved to India, my country of citizenship, where I attended university and completed a graduate degree. I then worked for a short period, until I decided to move to and study in the United States. I started my education in the US in 2009.

Why did you decide to pursue your higher education at Goodwin College?

When I first came to the USA, I enrolled in a community college to gain credits in general studies. When the time came to pursue a degree, I wanted to attend a 4-year institution. I found Goodwin through an internet search and I chose it because it was situated in a convenient location and the cost of tuition was favorable. As an international student, I am required to pay out-of-state tuition fees for state colleges or universities - but since Goodwin College is a private institution, their tuition fees were fixed, so this was a better option for me.

The diversity of our student body, the institutional support our students receive and the strength of career options upon graduation are all areas of pride here at Goodwin College!

Tell us what you do in your current job?

I currently work as a histology technician for a medical laboratory that specializes in the diagnosis of cancers and cancer-related diseases. Histology technicians, also called Histotechnicians, are laboratory professionals who prepare human or animal tissue for microscopic examination. My work consists of carrying out tasks commonly performed by a histology technician, the only difference being that our laboratory only handles human tissue specimens.

Some of the tasks of a histology technician include; receiving and accessioning the tissue biopsy, processing the tissue through a series of chemical reagents, cutting fine sections of the tissue and mounting them on microscopic slides, and performing various types of tests on the tissue so that pathologists can examine the tissue and make a clinical diagnosis.

What degree did you pursue at Goodwin College and how did it prepare you for your current role in the professional world?

I completed my Bachelors of Science; Health Science, from Goodwin College in July 2016. I did not have any education or training in the field of histology before attending Goodwin College. So Goodwin College played an integral role in my current professional career. In addition to that, my bachelor’s degree in Health Science gave me a better understanding of health care and enabled me to interact with laboratory and medical professionals in a more appropriate manner. Goodwin College also makes it one of their goals to develop student’s critical-thinking skills and I can now appreciate how valuable a skill set that is.

How did you find your current job? Did you use Goodwin College resources?

I found my current employer through an internship I completed with them, during the final semester of my Histology degree. At the end of my Bachelor’s degree in Health Science, I asked my program director if I could intern with the same laboratory. Through two summer internships, I learned the manner in which the laboratory operated as well as built a rapport with the laboratory staff and management.

Immediately after completion of my Bachelor’s degree, I utilized the Student Career Services offered by Goodwin College. They helped me update my resume as well as set up potential job interviews. In addition, my Histology program director notified me of any histology technician openings which she came across.

What was it like to be a part of the Goodwin community as an international student?

Having now been a part of the Goodwin community I have a greater appreciation of what Goodwin has to offer. Goodwin College has a very diverse student population and as an international student, this played an important role in making me feel welcomed and accepted in the community.

As an international student, I rarely, if ever, felt like an outsider at classes or events at the school. The integration of students of various social and economic backgrounds gave me the opportunity to learn to interact with people that were different from myself, as well as allow me to learn cultural norms.

What do you think about the faculty and staff at Goodwin College?

The teaching staff and administrative faculty at Goodwin are exceptional. The teachers were always approachable and willing to assist their students in reaching their goals, and the faculty would always go one step ahead in addressing student concerns or issues. I developed good relationships with my teachers and I cherish the knowledge that they passed on to me.

What college memories stand out in your mind?

Goodwin College not only helped me grow professionally but also personally. I was able to grow as an individual and appreciate those in my community. I remember having to complete a community service requirement for my Bachelor’s degree. I volunteered at a soup kitchen, and even though it was not related to my education, it was one of the most valuable experiences I gained. It gave me a sense of achievement and belonging to serve the community.

Another memorable experience at Goodwin College was my commencement ceremony. My family travel to the US to attend the event and it was a wonderful experience that I will cherish for a lifetime.
