Tell us about your school experiences before coming to Springfield College.

I am originally from Ghana and I completed elementary school all the way to high school in the capital city of Accra.

I attended a boarding school for four years prior to coming to the United States for University. During this period, I completed my IGCSE and A levels which are equivalent to high school and Advanced Placement courses in the US. Being in boarding school meant that I was always on a routine and that has helped me in my college life. I don’t have trouble waking up for lectures or attending on-campus events as I am used to being on a schedule.

Why did you choose to study in the United States and specifically, at Springfield College?

I wanted to challenge myself by leaving Ghana and my comfort zone - this is why I decided to travel abroad for university. Springfield College appealed to me because of the positive energy and vibrant image it portrayed during my online search for colleges.

What are you studying at Springfield College?

I am studying Criminal Justice with a minor in Economics. I want to go to law school and I figured getting a solid foundation in American Law will make that transition smoother for me.

What were your first few days like at Springfield College?

I was so excited to be starting a new chapter of my life! Going away to college was a big deal for me because it made me feel like I was finally an adult as I was responsible for every decision I made.

When I first arrived at Springfield College, I remember thinking how beautiful the campus was and how serene the area felt with all the magnificent trees and the surrounding Lake Massasoit.

I was nervous on my first day of class as I had no friends and I did not know what to expect or how to act. The classroom setting was also very different than what I was used to back home - not in terms of looks, but the relationships between students and professors and even between students were much more laid back and casual than in Ghana.

Did you have any problems adjusting to life in a new city and college?

I had a few challenges adjusting to the different culture in the United States and I am still adjusting to the Massachusetts weather! I have made it this far because I made it a point to learn about the people and area around me and I have found that knowledge was the answer to my struggles.

I am more of an introvert but I have been breaking out of that throughout my time at college. At Springfield College, it is almost impossible not to, with the countless number of activities and events that take place on campus.

The International Students Office was my second home and it serves as a great resource for me and other international students on campus. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and the school’s various clubs and organisations also help overseas students adjust and adapt to their new surroundings.

With all this support and encouragement, I have excelled academically and have remained on Dean’s list since my first semester at Springfield College. This has been challenging, but that’s what I signed up for!

Do you take part in any extracurricular activities at Springfield College?

I try to participate in as many extra-curricular activities as I can because it serves as a good way to network with other students, faculty, and staff members.

I currently serve as the President of the International Students Organisation and I am a mentor for two after-school programs, BLAST and Homework Heroes, which are dedicated to elementary and middle school students. I am a member of the Student Society for Bridging Diversity and was a member of the Students’ Activities Club where I helped organise programs and events with the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

I even try to make it to some group workout sessions on the weekends when I am not too tired!

I also started my job at the law firm during my second semester at Springfield College. It was sometimes difficult balancing my work with my studies and extracurricular activities, but with time and a lot of planning and determination, I have made it all work.

What do you plan to do after you graduate from college?

My dream is to become a lawyer - I am fascinated by anything pertaining to law. I really enjoy what I am studying at Springfield College and I have availed a lot of opportunities both on and off campus. I am currently working at a law firm as a legal assistant. At this point, there is nothing more fulfilling for me!

I want to go to law school and if I get accepted into Georgetown University, I will undertake the joint Law and MBA program they offer because I believe it is a perfect combination for me, considering I want to become a corporate lawyer and an entrepreneur.
