Top 5 Myths About Studying Abroad
Are your assumptions stopping you from going after your dreams? We are shattering the myths about studying abroad to show you why it’s a bigger possibility than you think!
Sometimes, our dreams are so big that they seem impossible to us, and we start to make excuses for why we can’t achieve them. Sadly, in most cases this is done without fully assessing the situation. Studying abroad is one of those big dreams that people avoid exploring because they are being held back by a certain set of beliefs. Luckily, we are here to shatter the myths and show you that you should never say never!
Studying Abroad Is Too Expensive With Few To None Scholarships
In some cases, this “myth” can be true. Continuing your studies is already expensive, and deciding to study abroad can become even more costly. But financial restraints are still something that can be overcome with scholarships, grants and student loans.
Students from India, can, for instance, apply for a student loan through Credila, one of SchoolApply’s partners. Numerous scholarships are also available to students such as merit-based, student-specific, destination-specific, program-specific or even subject-specific scholarships. Contact your shortlisted universities to find out what scholarships they have available. Here is a list of scholarships and grants available for international students from Go Overseas.
It is also important to note that not all schools are equally expensive. Medicine HAT College in Canada, for instance, is a reputable college whose cost per student continues to be one of the lowest in Alberta.
IMT - Institute of Management Technology - Dubai has quickly become one of the most reputable business schools in the Gulf region and offers affordable, quality education.
It Will Be Better To Travel After You Have Graduated
It is easy to believe that it will be more convenient to travel the world after you have graduated and landed your first big job. Yes, you might have more money to travel but the reality is that after entering the workforce, you have a significant lack of resources like time and energy. This is usually the time when you settle into your own apartment and start your adult life. You might not think so now, but your priorities will change and your responsibilities grow.
Rather put some spending money away and make use of the time you have while studying to explore the world. The opportunity might not present itself again.
I Do Not Speak Their Native Tongue
English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. There is bound to be a university that offers their programmes in English, or offer courses to help improve your English ability. If you cannot find one, then you have the rest of the world to search for a university that offers the courses in English. This is the least of your worries. As long as you are able to speak, read and write in English, then you will be okay.
If you are interested in learning the native language, you can register for a language course at your university or ask your friends to teach you.
My GPA is too low
If you think that you cannot get entrance into a school because you have a low GPA, then think again. Canadian University Dubai, Capilano University and South Seattle College require a GPA of only 2!
Of course there are other options as well where you do not require a GPA. Bennington College, for instance, do not require any transcripts. All you need to do is submit a self-curated portfolio of your work to Bennington College to be considered for admission.
Other universities offer bridging courses and other alternatives to help you gain admission. Contact your perspective university and ask them what your options are if you do not quite meet the admission requirements.
Experience As An International Student Does Not Matter To Your Future Employer
Your potential employers might not outright say that they prefer people who were international students. However, it is not always as much about the fact that you studied abroad but more about the skills you learnt.
Being able to make a plan when things go south, taking responsibility for your studies and time, being able to interact with different cultures, and being able to stand on your own are some of the skills that you will likely learn during your time abroad. It will make you more open minded and definitely give you an edge over other candidates.
A significant leader, Nelson Mandela, once said: “It is only impossible until it is done.” Yes – there are things to consider and sometimes your circumstances do not allow you to follow your dreams but do not dismiss them before doing thorough research.
