What Is a Bachelor’s in Spanish?

A Bachelor’s in Spanish is an undergraduate program that aims to provide a comprehensive education in the Spanish language, culture and literature. Admission to such a program usually does not require prior knowledge of Spanish. Students are expected to take introductory-level language courses in order to begin gaining proficiency. However, those who begin with a knowledge of the language can usually take a placement test in order to be admitted to higher-level courses. Required courses may include:

  • Various levels of Spanish conversation
  • Various levels of Spanish composition
  • Overview of Spanish-language literature
  • Introduction to literary analysis

One of the goals of the Spanish program is to impart fluency in conversational and written Spanish. Higher-level courses may be taught entirely in Spanish, including submitted assignments and papers.

In addition to basic courses in language and history, many Spanish curricula make room for students to specialise in areas of interest to them. Usually, this means including tracks such as Hispanic linguistics, literature and culture. Some examples of electives in a Spanish program might be:

  • Spanish Literature
  • Latin American Literature
  • Literature in the Middle Ages
  • Latin American Novel
  • Spanish Neoclassicism
  • Spanish Phonetics
  • Literature and the Mexican Revolution

The Spanish curriculum at most schools strives to balance study of Spain and of Latin America, noting differences in dialect and linguistic development as well as in literary styles and trends.
