Bachelor of English

A Bachelor of English is one of the most versatile degree programs at the undergraduate level, and graduates are able to find jobs in the public, private and international sector.

What Is a Bachelor of English?

A Bachelor of English is an undergraduate degree that typically takes four years to complete. However, timing depends on a candidate’s course load, the school and the country. Students learn the science behind the English language while studying how words function in writing, literature and speech. Students also learn to master grammar, punctuation and syntax while exploring film, English theory, pop culture and rhetoric. Most programmes expose students to an array of literary works from the Middle Ages, the Civil War, the Renaissance and more. Typical coursework may includes any of the following:

  • Introduction to Creative Writing
  • United States Literature
  • British Literature
  • William Shakespeare
  • Poetry
  • John Milton
  • Medieval English Literature
  • Romantics
  • African American Literature
  • Essay Structure
  • Introduction to Children’s’ Literature
  • Science Fiction
  • Critical Theory
  • Fiction
  • Intellectual Movements
  • Studies of Modernism

Most schools also allow candidates to participate in independent study and internship opportunities, and students can usually choose to complete either a Bachelor of Science (BS) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Furthermore, Bachelor of English programmes tend to have fewer students than other disciplines. The small class size provides a great training ground for discussion-based learning and advanced seminars.

Admission requirements vary by school and country. In the US for example, students must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as an acceptable score from a college entrance exam, such as the SAT or ACT.

What Are the Benefits of Earning a Bachelor of English?

English students learn about culture, language, history and art, but the greatest benefit is the analytical and collaborative training. Studying English teaches students to think critically, collaborate effectively and communicate findings with intelligence. Plus, English students tend to be highly persuasive and are easily able to recognize historical trends. These are highly marketable skills in all areas of business, government, healthcare and more. Furthermore, an undergraduate degree in English is a great stepping stone for graduate work. In fact, English majors tend to score high on graduate entrance exams, and some of the top medical schools in the US regularly accept English graduates.

What Kind of Career Can You Expect with a Bachelor of English?

Because critical thinking is a key element in an English programme, students are well suited for a variety of jobs and fields upon graduation. Employers value a candidate’s ability to communicate with precision, authority and an analytical mindset. Teaching is by far the most common career field for graduates, but opportunities exist in a wide variety of fields. Here is a list of potential jobs:
