Bachelor’s in Chemistry

A Bachelor’s in Chemistry teaches students about the nature of matter, and how it can be manipulated. In order to gain entry into this programme, you will need to have a high-school education or its equivalent. Throughout the programme, you will take math and science courses, and conduct experiments in laboratories. For the vast majority of students, earning this degree can take anywhere from three to five years. Chemistry is closely related to physics and biology, so you can expect to take courses in these fields as well.

What is a Bachelor’s in Chemistry?

Chemistry requires a strong understanding of mathematics, so it would be helpful if you have taken algebra already. Some programmes may even give you the opportunity to specialise in a particular field of chemistry, such as quantum chemistry or environmental chemistry. Regardless of your area of specialisation, you can expect to engage in the following activities during your bachelor’s programme:

  • Take courses in general chemistry, calculus, physics, biochemistry, organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and nuclear chemistry.
  • Perform lab experiments in order to understand chemical reactions and the nature of various elements and substances.
  • Attend lectures and seminars taught by leading chemists.
  • Take exams in order to demonstrate proficiency in a certain subject area.

During your studies, you will learn about the periodic table, electron exchange, and acids and bases. You will also be expected to perform basic calculations.

What Are the Benefits of Earning a Bachelor’s in Chemistry?

Here are just a few of the most commonly reaped benefits of majoring in chemistry:

  • Chemistry is a versatile degree, so you will have a considerable number of career paths to choose from.
  • Studies show that there is a strong correlation between income and education levels. The more education you acquire, the more you will be worth.
  • If you plan to earn a Master’s in Chemistry, you will need to obtain a bachelor’s first.

In most cases, students who perform well academically and professionally tend to see the most benefits.

What Kind of Career Can You Expect With a Bachelor’s in Chemistry?

Chemistry is a broad subject matter, so you will have many careers to choose from. Many students find employment as analytical chemists, working in laboratories and facilities around the world. They use a plethora of scientific methods to understand the nature of matter and substances, and how they behave under certain conditions. Analytical chemists are often employed by the pharmaceutical industry, and they play an important role in the development of medications and other drugs.

If you prefer to work in the manufacturing industry, your skills will be appreciated there as well. Your knowledge of inorganic chemistry will help you develop products, and improve the materials used to construct them. Chemists are a key element of the plastics industry, and they are also heavily employed by the petroleum industry as well.

Students who enjoy nature often choose to work as environmental chemists. These chemists study the quality of the air, soil and water in various environments. They may also perform tests on the water to ensure that it is safe to drink. Other potential chemistry careers include:

  • Nuclear Chemist
  • Theoretical Chemist
  • Chemistry Teacher
