A Bachelor’s of Science degree is an undergraduate degree awarded in the fields related to science, math and engineering. There is no universal list of academic majors for which a Bachelor’s of Science is awarded. Whether a student receives a Bachelor’s of Science degree for completing a course of study in a given field may vary between universities. For example, at one institution, a student studying economics may receive a Bachelor’s of Science, while at another university the student may receive a Bachelor’s of Arts for completing the same work. Some institutions, especially in the US, offer only Bachelor’s of Arts degrees, even for subjects related to the hard sciences.

What Is a Bachelor’s of Science?

A Bachelor’s of Science is the first academic degree that is generally awarded to students pursuing a course of study in math or hard sciences. Different universities award Bachelor’s of Science in different academic fields. For example, some schools award Bachelor’s of Science degrees for soft sciences like sociology, while other universities award Bachelor’s of Arts degrees for those same majors. Students can begin working towards this degree immediately after graduating from secondary education. The degree may be followed by further study in the form of a Master’s or PhD degree in a related academic field.

A Bachelor’s of Science usually takes at least four years to complete, though some universities offer an accelerated program which takes as little as three years. Completing the degree generally requires the student to attend classroom lectures, participate in lab work and complete independent research. The exact proportion of each type of study varies depending upon the student’s academic major. Students completing a degree in the hard sciences can expect a higher proportion of lab work, while those getting their Bachelor’s of Science in math will generally have more classroom study.
