Bachelor’s in Radiology

A Bachelor’s in Radiology helps many aspiring radiologic technologists stand out in a competitive job market, as many radiologic technicians have certificates or associate degrees. A Bachelor’s can also help qualify someone to become a specialised radiologist assistant; these people must pass specialised certification examinations and become licensed. In any case, a Bachelor’s in Radiology goes under different names; the University of North Carolina in the US calls it Medical Imaging (Radiologic Technology), while a radiologic technician could get a degree in Radiologic Science at Oregon Tech, also in the US. Programs are available all over the world and include Diagnostic Radiography at Birmingham City University in the UK and Diagnostic Radiography at the University of Sydney in Australia.

What Is a Bachelor’s in Radiology?

Bachelor’s degree programs in Radiology, as touched on above, go under different names and may be geared toward different sets of students. Oregon Tech’s program, for example, targets students who already work as radiologic technicians. Radiation therapy, magnetic resonance and medical dosimetry are other radiologic programs.

Students can expect to take classes in:

  • Human anatomy
  • Radiologic science
  • Radiography

In addition, clinical education is required and helps students develop their technical and clinical skills. Some degree programs such as the one at the University of North Carolina lets students combine a Bachelor’s course of study with a Master’s degree.

What Are the Benefits of Earning a Bachelor’s in Radiology?

You do not need an X-ray to detect the benefits of earning a Bachelor’s in Radiology. The benefits include:

  • Expanded job opportunities (compared with the base entry level of a certificate or associate degree for radiologic technicians).
  • Opportunity to pursue education for a job such as radiologist assistant.
  • Ability to choose from a wide range of schools and programs worldwide.
  • Opportunity to do at least some of the classwork online, if desired.
  • Hands-on clinical experience.
  • Certificate in Radiography after completion of many programs.

A Bachelor’s degree can give you a head start compared with an associate degree or a certificate, and schools such as Loma Linda University in California and Virginia Commonwealth University in Virginia, offer Registered Radiologist Assistant programs for students who want to pursue radiology at the Master’s level, or who want to specialise in areas such as Nuclear Medicine at the Bachelor’s level.

What Kind of Career Can You Expect with a Bachelor’s in Radiology?

Many people who earn a Bachelor’s in Radiology work as radiologic technologists. These technologists are also called radiographers, and they may specialise in areas such as mammography. However, the technologists generally work with MRI and CT imaging:

  • Image certain areas of a patient’s body per doctor instructions.
  • Take medical histories and conduct other preliminary work before imaging occurs.
  • Protect areas of the body that do not need to be imaged.
  • Operate imaging equipment.
  • Evaluate the quality of images in coordination with doctors to see if further images are necessary.
  • Maintain patient records.

Job titles may include mammographer, MRI technologist, nuclear medicine technologist and vascular technologist. There are quite a few Bachelor’s in Radiology degree programs across the globe, so start exploring your choices today.
