Bachelor’s in Medicine in the US

Doctors are among the most respected and well-compensated professionals in the world. Your interest in such a career is understandable and to be commended. While the educational pathway that you must travel to get there may be a long one, any of those who have already completed it will tell you that it is well-worth your time and effort. Your medical education will be relied upon to assist countless patients throughout your career. Thus, you want to ensure that you get the highest quality of schooling possible.

With several world-renowned hospitals supporting a large number of internationally-acclaimed medical schools, the United States is viewed as one of the premier places to earn your medical degree. Yet prior to gaining acceptance to one of these prestigious institutions, you must first complete the requisite undergraduate work. The good news is that hundreds of colleges and universities across the US have programs in place specifically designed to help both local and international students prepare to get their medical degrees.

Undergraduate Studies in Medicine in the US

Unlike the model followed in many other countries, US colleges and universities do not offer a dedicated Bachelor’s degree in medicine. Rather, they prepare students for careers in medicine by offering pre-medicine programs. Some schools require admission to their pre-med programs; at others, you simply need to apply.

All pre-med programs offered at American colleges and universities must adhere to the curriculum standards set by the Association of American Medical Colleges. These standards are based primarily in the physical sciences. However, since there is no Bachelor’s degree in medicine, you may choose your degree emphasis from among any academic discipline. You simply need to complete the required pre-med classes in conjunction with the required coursework for your degree. Most students hoping to go into medicine are encouraged to pursue Bachelor’s degrees in areas such as:

  • Physics.
  • Chemistry.
  • Biology.
  • Microbiology.

Several of the courses offered as part of these degree programs will meet the required pre-med curriculum. Pre-med curriculum requirements may also require you to take a few more English and mathematics courses on top of your chosen school’s general education standards.

On average, your undergraduate studies will take four to five years to complete. Towards the end of your Bachelor’s degree program, you will be required to take the appropriate entrance exam in order to qualify for admission to medical school. A strong academic record combined with a good entrance exam score will give you the best chance at getting into the school of your choice.

The Benefits of Participating in an American Pre-Med Program

The American healthcare system is supported by some of the finest personnel and medical technologies in the entire world. It is for this reason that so many students choose to pursue medical degrees here. Having direct access to such resources and learning from those who have developed them and who use them, is an invaluable asset not found in other countries. As you work your way through your undergraduate studies, you may encounter research or work study opportunities that allow you to gain real-world experience by working alongside the very clinicians making headlines around the globe for their advances in medical treatment. Such experience can help increase your chances of being admitted to medical school.

Another benefit to starting your medical studies in the US is the cultural diversity you experience. The 2013/14 International Education’s Open Doors Report listed California, New York, and Texas as being the most popular destinations in the US for international students. Each of those states offer a cultural experience completely distinct from one another. Your exposure to such diversity can be a great benefit to you when the time comes to make the decision as to where you want to go to medical school or where you will ply your trade.

Where Your Medical Bachelor’s Degree Can Take You

The obvious career path made available through an American pre-med program is to work as a physician or surgeon. However, there are also other options available if you are unable to gain acceptance to medical school. These Include:

  • Physician’s Assistant.
  • Physical Therapist.
  • Nurse.
  • Healthcare Consultant.

Each of these careers offer rewards and experiences similar to that of a medical doctor.

Your journey to becoming a clinician begins now. Choosing to pursue your undergraduate medical studies in the US will give you access to tools and resources from one of the finest healthcare systems in the entire world. That advantage will be evident in the interest you will garner when you officially embark on your medical career.
