A Bachelor of Education degree provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare them for teaching careers in various disciplines. Students learn not only how to become competent and effective educators, they also receive training in many different areas to enhance their abilities and reach as many students as possible. These degree programs are offered throughout the world at hundreds of universities, each with their own unique approach to how to create the best teachers possible.

What is a Bachelor of Education?

Students in a Bachelor of Education program are given the opportunity to learn about how to become great educators while also specializing in a particular area of interest. Students choose both the age level in which they wish to teach, either primary or secondary, and also choose their specialty, if applicable. There are a wide variety of teaching emphases from which students can choose, each of which will have a direct impact on the student’s career options and marketability. Core education requirements and formats are usually similar at universities around the world, with the main focus being on giving future educators the tools they need to reach students with many different learning styles. Some course topics within the program may include:

  • Historical, philosophical and sociological concepts regarding learning types.
  • Child psychology.
  • Human development and learning
  • Methods of teaching
  • How to design curriculum and assessments
  • Special education
  • Technology in the classroom.

Graduates of a Bachelor of Education program are prepared to enter the classroom, but they may find these programs as an excellent foundation for educational studies. Many go on to pursue additional educational opportunities in master’s and PhD programs in education-related fields of study.

What Are the Benefits of Getting a Bachelor of Education?

No matter the subject or specialisation, education can be an incredibly rewarding career. There are few opportunities like it for people to help shape future generations and to see young individuals grow, learn and become passionate about their interests. While some private schools may not rigidly require their teachers to have a formal degree, most public schools around the world have minimum requirements for licensing. Successfully completing this type of program is the only avenue to becoming a teacher in these cases. Some additional benefits of the degree include:

  • Knowing how to design and implement a curriculum that targets the learning capabilities of students.
  • Experience with different learning styles and how to handle them can make teachers better communicators.
  • Schools are not open every day of the week, so teachers are able to spend a great deal of time in other pursuits with family or friends when school is not in session during holiday seasons.

The Bachelor of Education is also the gateway to many other careers within the education industry. Graduates can pursue additional degrees to increase their knowledge and skills as educators, or they can pursue a degree in a related field that may prepare them for administrative roles. In most cases, graduates are also more marketable and receive better salaries than teachers who have not completed these programs.

What Kind of Career Can You Expect with a Bachelor of Education?

Compared to other types of degrees, students who graduate with a Bachelor of Education have somewhat limited career prospects outside their chosen discipline. The program students choose to enter directly affects their ability to teach certain age groups and subjects. For example, if a student chooses a primary specialty, he or she will be unable to easily pursue a career as a high school math teacher without first completing extra coursework in these specialties. This is because licensing requirements dictate that teachers have certain experience and education that qualifies them to become teachers.

There is still some variety in the careers graduates are able to pursue, most of which have to do with the environment a graduate chooses to teach in. However, graduates may find success in other teaching-related fields as well. These include:

  • Teaching at Montessori schools for all age groups.
  • Vocational teaching for high school students and adults.
  • Teaching gifted or special needs children.
  • Providing English as a Second Language educations for international students.
  • Evaluation specialists and curriculum design.
  • Administrative careers, such as principal and school counselor.
